Start with the job, not the accuracy claim
Accuracy percentages are difficult to compare because results change with language, microphone, room noise, vocabulary and test method. A better evaluation uses your own documents and measures the correction time after dictation.
Built-in Windows tools
Windows 11 includes Voice Access, which can control the PC and dictate text with on-device speech recognition. Microsoft also provides voice typing, which uses online speech recognition. These tools are a sensible first test for users who need basic dictation or accessibility features without separate software.
Built-in Mac Dictation and Voice Control
macOS Dictation can enter text wherever typing is available, while Voice Control adds spoken navigation and editing commands. Availability and processing behavior depend on language, region, Mac model and settings.
Dragon Professional
Dragon Professional v16 is a mature Windows product aimed at professional dictation and advanced customization. It is especially relevant when deep Windows voice control and established enterprise deployment matter more than Mac support.
OraWrite
OraWrite focuses on a push-to-talk workflow for Windows and macOS. It combines local-first dictation, unlimited audio file transcription and optional bidirectional translation across 51 languages. It does not aim to replace every accessibility command offered by Voice Access, Voice Control or Dragon.
A five-point test before buying
- Confirm the software supports every computer you use.
- Test your real microphone in your usual room.
- Dictate names, numbers and specialist terms from your work.
- Check whether audio files and export formats are included.
- Understand where audio is processed and whether cloud mode is optional.
